According to the 2018 Global Gender Gap Report, Vietnam was ranked 77th out of 149 countries in gender equality (IMF, 2019). Vietnam has made notable strides in women's economic participation, with a narrowing gap between men and women in the labour force. However, gender inequality remains a persistent issue across Vietnam (Nguyen, 2021). The CAREER project, officially named ‘Cultivating Awareness, Resources, and Equality for Educators in Vietnam,’ has been carefully crafted to positively impact both economic development and social welfare in Vietnam, with a specific focus on pre-teachers. This project addresses a range of critical aspects within the education sector, ultimately contributing to the nation's progress

CAREER: Cultivating Awareness, Resources, and Equality for Educators in Vietnam

A British Council funded project between UCEM, UK and CTU, Vietnam

Project Rationale

One of the biggest challenges worldwide is gender equality and its impacts on the individual and the global economy. In Vietnam, despite robust legal provisions promoting gender equality, women still encounter instances of bias and preconceived notions. They frequently encounter limitations in terms of economic and political prospects, spanning from within their households to community and national settings.

The project's commitment to promoting gender equality among pre-teachers aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) of the United Nations, emphasising the pivotal role of gender equality in sustainable development. By empowering future educators and stressing the importance of gender equality in education, the project actively contributes to creating a more equitable and sustainable society. The CAREER project's paramount importance is accentuated within the specific context of pre-teachers in Vietnam. By addressing gender equality, educator empowerment, educational disparities, economic development, diversity in leadership, and global integration, the project plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of education in Vietnam and its broader societal well-being.

Objectives:

  1. To conduct rigorous research to assess the effectiveness of gender equality initiatives by qualitative and quantitative data collection in Vietnam. This objective aims to continually refine project strategies based on empirical evidence and data-driven insights.

  2. To minimise gender bias within the educational system by reviewing and revising curriculum materials to ensure they are more gender-inclusive, starting from the

  3. Can Tho University. It will also raise awareness among educators about the need to eradicate gender biases in teaching methods and content.

  4. To empower Pre-Teachers by providing comprehensive training. Mentorship programs and resources to empower pre-teachers in Vietnam.

  5. Develop dialogue and networking opportunities amongst Higher Education scholars and organisations across Vietnam and the U.K. on gender equality.

  6. Understand the organisational, cultural, and self-imposed barriers for females in educational and career choices through data analysis and publishing.
